History of Bedford Stuyvesant

Bedford Stuyvesant was initaly refered to as, the Village of Bedford and was a separate town from the Village of Brooklyn. Both were situated on the ferry road to Jamaica Queens and Eastern Long Island.

Bedford Stuyvesant eventually became known as a landmark area. During World War II, African-American’s from the South started to migrate into the neighborhood and this was a result of the agricultural decline that had taken place in the South. The neighborhood also saw its first wave of African American immigrants arrive and at this time they went on to establish a strong cultural and economic commerce in the Bedford Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn New York. Today Bedford Stuy has the second largest population of African Americans in the United States and it is referred to as an international epicenter for Black culture.

Although Bedford-Stuyvesant  gained most of it’s global recognition as the setting for several of Spike Lee’s films including Do the Right Thing, Crooklyn, and Clockers, its fame started well before the films were originated. Bedford-Stuyvesant is now the new hot spot for arts and culture in Brooklyn.

Bedford Stuyvesant gave birth to brooklyn’s nick name of the “City of Churches”, Bedford-Stuyvesant also has a vast historical presence one of which includes the 111 year-old St. Philip’s Episcopal Church and Bridge Street AWME Church. These churches are some of the oldest in New York.
